Why We Founded Um:bruch

The big questions of our time — climate change, inequality, digital transformation, democratic crisis — are debated in think tanks. But these think tanks have a problem: they talk to decision-makers, not to society.

The Problem

Policy briefs behind paywalls. Studies in academic jargon. Events for specialist audiences. This means that the people affected by the decisions cannot participate in the debate.

Our Approach

Um:bruch does things differently:

• Open Access: Every publication freely available
• Open Data: Code and data on GitHub
• All formats: From policy briefs to explainer videos to TikTok
• Lean: Low infrastructure costs through self-hosting and open source (AI subscriptions are on top, of course)
